November 7, 1970 –
The live action/ animation film, The Phantom Tollbooth, directed by Chuck Jones, Abe Levitow, and Dave Monahan, and starring Butch Patrick and the voice talents of Mel Blanc, Daws Butler, Candy Candido, Hans Conried, June Foray, Patti Gilbert, Shepard Menken, Cliff Norton, Larry Thor, and Les Tremayne, was released on this date.
This film was made in 1967-68, but it wasn’t heavily promoted due to MGM’s financial problems and frequent management changes. When it was finally released in 1970, the studio only showed it for two weeks, as a weekend matinee. It was not a box-office success.
