The low budget sci-fi classic, The Brother from Another Planet, written and directed by John Sayles, and starring Joe Morton, Darryl Edwards, Steve James, Bill Cobbs, and David Strathairn, was released on this date.
John Sayles financed most of this movie himself. Sayles has describes this movie as being about the immigrant experience of assimilation. He spent part of his MacArthur Fellows ‘genius‘ grant on the film, which cost $350,000 to produce. The film grossed over ten times its production cost in its first weekend of full release.
