The rom-com film, Can’t Buy Me Love, directed by Steve Rash and starring Patrick Dempsey, Amanda Peterson, and Dennis Dugan, opened in the US on this date.
Michael Swerdlick said the idea for the film originated while he was a mailroom clerk at the William Morris Agency. One of the agents invited him and other mailroom staffers to a party on a Saturday night. Swerdlick brought with him a very attractive female friend, and guests took notice. That Monday, he found that his status at the agency improved right away, as “everyone wanted to be my friend,” he said. When he decided to write a script about high school, he incorporated this experience into the plot.
