October 10, 1966 –

The lumbering epic, based on the eponymous 1959 novel by James A. Michener, Hawaii. directed by George Roy Hill, and starring Julie Andrews, Max von Sydow, Richard Harris, Gene Hackman, and Carroll O’Connor debuted on this date. (If you don’t blink, you can see Bette Midler, in her first screen appearance and an extra.) While the film opened to only middling reviews, it did quite well in the box office,
Fred Zinnemann was originally slated to direct and Audrey Hepburn and Sir Alec Guinness were set to star. Unfortunately, conflicts with producer Walter Mirisch and screenwriter Dalton Trumbo, as well as numerous delays caused by the weather, forced him to walk off the project shortly before filming started. George Roy Hill was brought in to direct.
