May 20, 2000 –
Director Wong Kar-Wai’s lush, visually hypnotic masterpiece, In the Mood for Love (Faa Yeung Nin Wa), starring Maggie Cheung and Tony Leung premiered at Cannes Film festival, on this date.
The film’s creation was as evocative and painstaking as its final form – filming stretched over fifteen months, a result of Wong’s improvisational approach and perfectionist vision. Renowned cinematographer Christopher Doyle, a long-time collaborator of Wong’s, initially helmed the film’s striking visuals. However, the extended shoot forced Doyle to leave the project to honor previous commitments, leading to his replacement by Ping Bin Lee and Pun-Leung Kwan. A similar situation unfolded during the production of 2046, marking Doyle’s final collaboration with Wong as of 2022.
