Today is St. Stephen’s Day – the day King Wenceslas and his page brave the wintry night to give alms out to the poor.
The citizens of the British Commonwealth honor the saint on this day by putting on trunks and gloves to beat each other bloody silly. (In Ireland, it is known as Wren’s Day, where they hunt the defenseless little bird after donning trunks and gloves.
