March 28, 1973 –
Atlantic Records released the fifth studio album by Led Zeppelin, Houses of the Holy, on this date.
The cover photo for Houses of the Holy depicts a group of unnaturally hued feral children making their way up an ancient incline of geometric stones, evoking the band’s fascination with the supernatural and science fiction in equal measure. Inspired by 2001: A Space Odyssey author Arthur C. Clarke’s book Childhood’s End, in which children climb off the edge of the world, the surreal image was created by the design team Hipgnosis, whose instantly memorable art for the likes of Pink Floyd, T. Rex and ELO made them a favorite among the early Seventies rock groups.
