October 20, 1980 –
U2 released their debut album, Boy, produced by Steve Lillywhite, on this date.
When the time came for U2 to release their debut album, young Peter Rowen, the younger brother of Derek Rowen aka Guggi, an Dublin artist and member of The Virgin Prunes, a band who were friends and collaborators with U2, was pressed into service. The iconic stark black and white photo of him staring into the camera, arms behind his head, taken by Hugo McGuinness, graced the LP. Rowen was paid in Mars bars. Ironically, Peter Rowen, now 47, became a professional photographer himself, and has worked for Channel 4, Heineken, Guinness, Lexus and many other corporate and newspaper clients.
